  About Our Resources

Our group has been developing resource for years to help our instruction of students, residents, practicing clinicians and faculty. We make these resources available to other faculty at charges that cover some expenses.

Stimulus Video Interviews and Modules:  We first developed a set of trigger tapes that encourage a description and discussion of the core skills of patient-centered communications. More recently we have incorporated the trigger tapes above into digital, CD-ROM based communications instructional modules on all of the Core Patient Centered Communications Skills.

We have found that this media allows learners to proceed on their own pace and in fact is inherently more interactive, as the modules require each learner to make certain decisions in communications (in response to the trigger tapes), and the learner then receives immediate feedback. The content of the module may be edited by your faculty. For a demonstration of the Core Skills Modules and to see an example, click on "Core Skills Modules"

Scenarios for Standardized Patients:
Practice with the core skills is essential for mastery. Like many others we find that using scenarios specifically designed to provide opportunity to demonstrate core skills proficiency is essential for baseline, formative and summative evaluations. We have developed over 25 scenarios that are carefully designed to emphasize: Rapport Building, Agenda Setting, Information Management, Active Listening (clues scripted into cases), Addressing Feelings, and Reaching Common Ground.  Practice with these scenarios is the center of instruction with students and a useful and important part of resident instruction. To see the range of the scenarios and to view how they are constructed, click on "
Standardized Patient Scenarios"

Communications Assessment using “The Common Ground Assessment Instrument” This validated assessment instrument is tied to the “Patient Centered Model”; to the content of the teaching modules and to the individual scenarios. For example the case specific clues are written into the assessment instrument so faculty or other raters (SPs or others) can easily assess whether the interviewer uses active listening, or addresses the feelings that are built into the case. Click on "Communications Assessment" to view the instrument, references, and other related materials.

Integrated OSCEs - Addressing the ACGME core clinical competencies represents a serious challenge. We have been using Integrated OSCEs to assess ALL of the competencies with our three residencies. We currently have five different, multi-stationed, cases that address everything from communications to ethic, history taking, differential diagnosis, evidence based medicine. Click "Integrated OSCE" if you would like to view a PowerPoint describing the elements of the Integrated OSCE. To discuss your needs and interests in using these integrated clinical cases contact Forrest Lang E-mail
