Hetal Brahmbhatt, MD Med/Psych Residency Training Director
Interim General Psychiatry Residency Training Director
A graduate of Smt. N.H.L. Municipal Medical College in India, he came to Johnson City in 1996 as a resident physician in ETSU psychiatry training program. Graduating in 2000, he went on to complete a second residency program in internal medicine. He held chief resident positions with both programs.
Dr. Brahmbhatt accepted a dual faculty appointment with ETSU in the departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Internal Medicine. He also serves as the Director of Consultation Liaison Services for in-patient psychiatry at Johnson City Medical Center and for medical services at Woodridge Hospital. In addition, he has an outpatient adult clinic through the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Internal Medicine.
His areas of clinical interest include religion and spirituality medicine, psychiatric aspects of medical illnesses, depression and primary care, and working with older adults.
He is the Program.
Ronald D. Franks, MD Dean of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs for the Quillen College of Medicine. Ronald D. Franks, M.D., became Dean of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs of East Tennessee State University and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences on September 1, 1997. Dr. Franks also serves as president of ETSU Physicians and Associates which is composed of 175 primary care and subspecialty physicians and is the largest single multi-specialty clinic within a 100 mile radius. Dr. Franks completed a year of General Medicine residency prior to pursuing Psychiatry.
Richard M. Jordan, MD Internal Medicine Residency Training Director A long-time advocate of the Program.
Stephen D. Loyd, MD Assistant Professor, of General Internal Medicine Fueled by his own interest in the integration of Medicine and Psychiatry, Dr. Loyd operates the primary continuity clinics for the Med/Psych Residents.
Barney E. Miller, PhD (Biochemistry) Research Director
Dr. Miller operates the Psychiatry Core Laboratory Facility which is located at 204A Stanton-Gerber Hall on the campus of the Mountain Home VA. His primary research interests include: Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and mood disorders. He has published over 30 original articles and book chapters. Along with Dr. Pumariega, he serves as a research mentor to the Med/Psych Residents.
Merry N. Miller, MD Chair for the Department of Psychiatry Dr. Miller is board certified in both General and Adolescent psychiatry. She specializes in mood and eating disorders in both adults and adolescents. She maintains an active research program relating menstrual variations and mental health, causes for depression, eating disorders and autoimmune causes for psychiatric disease. With her support, the Program will reach capacity in the next 2 years.
