Formal didactic instruction occurs on Tuesday afternoons for Psychiatry Residents. The curriculum is comprehensive and balanced. The PGY I curriculum begins two weeks prior to July 1 with preparation for the responsibilities as a psychiatric resident. Curriculum activities are sequential and in correlation with clinical responsibilities. Emphasis in the PGY I year of training includes fundamental psychiatric interviewing and diagnostic nosology, pharmacologic management, psychotherapeutic approaches and computer applications to professional life.

The PGY II curriculum builds on fundamentals with advanced interviewing techniques, extensive spiritual/cultural considerations for psychiatric care, delivery treatment of special populations, ethics, research techniques and continued psychotherapy education and preparation for assuming responsibility for individual psychotherapy cases.

The PGY III curriculum emphasizes child and adolescent psychiatry, comparative psychotherapies, continued advanced issues in psychotherapy, advanced preparation for teaching, history of psychiatry and transition to practice seminars.

The PGY IV curriculum offers flexibility for seniors to structure specialized academic interests through a senior seminar, an administrative psychiatric seminar as well as experience in teaching younger resident classes under supervision.

The PGY-V curriculum for combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residents is comprised of complementing curriculum experiences and opportunities for more sophisticated integration of didactic programs and teaching.

Mock Orals Annual formal evaluations of residents’ clinical expertise are done through participation in a mock oral examination that will prepare residents for eventual Part II Psychiatric Boards Examination. Immediate feedback is provided so the resident is able to continue to improve interviewing and overall clinical skills.

All residents are evaluated on their academic knowledge each year by participation in the Psychiatric Residents in Training Examination (PRITE), which offers performance feedback compared to all psychiatric residents in the country. Feedback from this examination is used to help residents identify areas for improvement in their knowledge base and evaluate the didactic and clinical experiences offered by the program
